This is the long way across Anatolia, from the valleys of Cappadocia to the far south-east, and it takes in three things most visitors to Turkey never see. The first is Mount Nemrut, where a Commagene king built his own funerary sanctuary on a summit at 2,150 metres and ringed it with colossal stone gods, whose heads now lie fallen at their feet. You arrive for sunset, when the light turns the mountain red. The second is Gobeklitepe and its sister site Karahantepe, stone circles raised around 11,000 years ago, thousands of years before writing or farming, with Sanliurfa between them, the city of Abraham, with its carp pool and its bazaar. The third is Gaziantep, where you end the tour, a city with the best food in the country and the Roman mosaics of Zeugma in its museum.

Good to know before you book

  • The tour runs from April to November only. Mount Nemrut is closed to visitors in winter because of snow, and the summit road is impassable. Our other south-eastern tours run all year.
  • Mount Nemrut is visited for sunset, so you come down the mountain after dark and reach your hotel in Adiyaman in the evening. The summit is at 2,150 metres and it is cold and windy there even in summer, so bring a jacket. The last stretch is a short uphill walk on a stone path.
  • The balloon flight is not included, but we can arrange it as an optional extra. It takes place at sunrise, before the day's tour begins. As you spend two nights in Cappadocia, you have two mornings to fly, and if neither morning flies you receive a full refund.
  • This tour covers long distances by road. Cappadocia to Adiyaman and Adiyaman to Sanliurfa are both driving days, broken with stops and lunch along the way.
  • This tour does not include assistant services at airports. The driver drops you at the terminal entrance, and you proceed to your gate after checking in your luggage.
  • The tour ends in Istanbul. You fly from Gaziantep on the sixth evening and are back at your Istanbul hotel around 23:00.
