This tour puts together the two sides of central and eastern Turkey that most travellers never manage to combine. You fly from Istanbul to Cappadocia and spend two days among the valleys, the cave churches and the underground cities. Then you travel overland across the plateau to Sanliurfa, with a lunch stop in Kahramanmaras. The reason for going that far is Gobeklitepe, where stone circles were raised around 11,000 years ago, thousands of years before writing or farming, and its sister site Karahantepe, where the pillars were cut straight out of the bedrock. Around them is Sanliurfa itself, the city of Abraham, with its carp pool, its bazaar and one of the best archaeology museums in the country, and the mud-brick houses of Harran on the plain to the south.

What to expect

• This is a private tour. Only you and your own group take part.
• The itinerary is flexible. You can change the route and set the start and end times to suit you.
• Accommodation is based on a standard double room: 2 nights in a cave hotel in Cappadocia and 1 night in Sanliurfa.
• Breakfast every morning, lunch with a soft drink on every touring day, and dinner in Sanliurfa, where you try the local Urfa kebab.
• All entrance tickets on the route are included.
• Domestic flights are economy class with Turkish Airlines or Pegasus Airlines, according to availability. Baggage allowance is 8 kg cabin and 15 kg checked baggage (23 kg in total).

Good to know before you book

• The balloon flight is not included, but we can arrange it as an optional extra. It takes place at sunrise, before the day's tour begins. As you spend two nights in Cappadocia, you have two mornings to fly. Flights depend on the weather and are cleared each morning by the civil aviation authority, and if neither morning flies you receive a full refund.
• Cappadocia to Sanliurfa is travelled overland and takes around eight hours, with a lunch stop in Kahramanmaras, known across Turkey for its ice cream. You arrive in Sanliurfa in the afternoon and start the tour there.
• Karahantepe is reached by a steep walk up a limestone ridge, with little shade. In summer your guide may reorder the day to visit it earlier, while it is cooler.
• This tour does not include assistant services at airports. The driver drops you at the terminal entrance, and you proceed to your gate after checking in your luggage.
• The tour ends in Istanbul. You are back at your Istanbul hotel around 23:00 on the fourth day.

Cancellation Policy

You can cancel up to 7 days before the tour start date and receive a full refund. If you cancel less than 7 days before the start date, the deposit is not refunded, as your domestic flight tickets are issued in your name and cannot be refunded. Any amount you have paid above the deposit is returned to you.
